I have been wearing and reviewing Xeros for over 10 years now, from the first pair of Contact sandals I bought when the company was just starting out. They never seem to disappoint. The 360 is no exception. For purposes of full disclosure, I received these at no cost for testing purposes. If you happen to buy them from here on my site, I will receive a small commission from the sale. There were NO preconditions or suggestions as to how I would review these, or any others that I have reviewed in the past.
These are a great all around training (and almost anything else) shoe. They have a multi use tread, not as aggressive as a trail shoe, (but they work for that, too...I tried it!). Whether you are in the gym, the yard, or running around town, these are really comfortable. The soft breathable upper is really forgiving to the feet. They, of course, in Xeros tradition, are zero drop, and have the characteristic wide toe box. One unique feature on these that I have never seen is the addition of rubber strips across the front/top of the upper. That feature will be, I think, particularly good for extra traction if you are doing things such as climbing ropes, etc. My use of them was a bit unique. I ran in them, of course, but the way I really put them through their paces was using them as I worked our organic orchard. I am tramping through mulch, up and down out of ladders and trees all day long when I am working the orchard (in addition to my day job). These have worked out very well for that purpose. The rubber strips, for my purpose, are handy for hooking a toe under a ladder rung or a limb as I'm reaching to pick fruit or prune branches. (I told you my use of these would be a bit unique.)
Most people will use these, I think, in the gym or weight room, doing aerobics, etc. and I think they are well suited for such activities. If you have a need for an all purpose, "go-to" shoe, the 360 just might be for you. I don't think you will be disappointed!<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK0SRgsL8tk/YRMxxkup47I/AAAAAAAAelw/u6r4l5jXpWwQUe3-2R1WCFOpaG5rTZpggCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-0312.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK0SRgsL8tk/YRMxxkup47I/AAAAAAAAelw/u6r4l5jXpWwQUe3-2R1WCFOpaG5rTZpggCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-0312.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NiQ1jA98Dwk/YRMx0H8dztI/AAAAAAAAel0/0DvN2NQCu94Ob_4RbaWrVszBpB4r1p7uwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-0313.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NiQ1jA98Dwk/YRMx0H8dztI/AAAAAAAAel0/0DvN2NQCu94Ob_4RbaWrVszBpB4r1p7uwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-0313.jpg"/></a></div>

I first tried the original Warriors from Shamma a number of years ago. I really enjoyed the incredible ground feel they provided, while offering protection from rocks, burrs, sticks, etc. More recently, I had the good fortune to obtain a pair of Mountain Goats, Shamma's model with a substantially thicker sole, made for heavy trail use. They are incredible, and I found myself wearing them whenever I was going on less-than-groomed trails. Add in their available Power Straps, and you are ready to take on the toughest terrain, wet or dry. Even in mud, these are on your feet to stay and they don't slide around.

I am referring to the new Warrior Maximus. This review has taken longer than most, as I have worn and worn these. I have had them on dirt trail, trail with heavy leaf/other debris, sand, mud, gravel, asphalt, concrete, you name it. I really gave this pair a tough trial. Josh has truly hit the sweet spot with this sandal. They are thinner than the Mountain Goats, and thicker than the original Warriors. They came with power straps, and feel incredibly light on your feet. These are part of his Elite collection. I opted for the Ultragrip footbed. I found it really comfortable and conforming to my foot, and able to hold it's grip, even when wet. These are the perfect combination of the qualities of the Mountain Goats and the original Warriors. Just right, thus the Goldilocks reference in the title. So far, they are wearing very little, considering all of the miles I have put on them. When they get muddy, they are easy to just hose off and set up to dry. If you want a truly great experience in a running sandal, give the Warrior Maximus a try. Xero sent this to me without charge for testing and review. If you happen to buy a pair from my site,</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #274e13; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.primitivehealth.blogspot.com&source=gmail&ust=1615784843230000&usg=AFQjCNGyZZbwnJPPvRgyuRsmJN2-5VBd2w" href="http://www.primitivehealth.blogspot.com/" style="color: #1155cc; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;" target="_blank">www.primitivehealth.blogspot.<wbr></wbr>com</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #274e13; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;">, I will receive a small affiliate commission. </span><p></p><div class="gmail_default" style="background-color: white; color: #274e13; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> That being said, I wanted to compare this new offering to the original Day-Lite Hiker that I have reviewed and tested previously. This offering has many of the same features that are present in Xero Shoes' models, such as a wide toe box, smooth interior that works with or without socks, zero drop, and durable sole and upper. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="background-color: white; color: #274e13; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> The main difference I noticed was the adjustment strap on the outside of the original model is gone, having been incorporated into the upper. There is also quite a difference in the soles. The Fusion has a much more robust, lugged sole that makes it suitable for any hiking situation. This sole proved to be a match for any terrain I encountered, and provided excellent protection from rocks and other trail features. It is a lightweight hiker, and has a water-resistant upper. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="background-color: white; color: #274e13; font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> Durability will be proven only over time, but if my past experiences with Xeros is any indication, these will be rugged and dependable. I have been wearing Xeros for over 10 years now, and still have the original pair of sandals I bought in 2010 when the company was still pretty new. Xero continues to innovate, and provide something for everyone. I am very pleased with these, and think you will be too!</div><div class="blogger-post-footer">http://technorati.com/faves?sub=addfavbtn&add=http://www.primitivehealth.blogspot.com</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975431442577522401.post-52245575201222367112020-08-16T17:38:00.004-07:002020-09-02T13:39:55.393-07:00WATCH HERE!...................Check out the banner above! I should probably call this conversations with myself, because I have those....not verbally, thankfully, but introspective thoughts. I've generally been active since I was a kid, and for certain periods, I was VERY active. High school sports were big, and kept you moving most days of the school year. Weekends and summers, I was on my bike, riding all over our small town in Western Kansas, as well as all of the country roads surrounding it. With friends, sometimes alone, I put many miles on that Western Flyer fixed gear bike with the coaster brakes. <br />
<br />
In college, the activity slowed down a bit, but took a HUGE spike when I hit the yellow footprints of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego on a January day, and non-stop for three solid months, pounding, running, grinding me into the best shape of my life, before or since.<br />
<br />
I only began running in earnest after my son was born, and began to do a lot of solitary miles in the early morning darkness, when everyone else was asleep. That's a great time to run.<br />
<br />
I have had peaks and valleys over the years, as life tends to get in the way of most plans and intentions. I had backed off a bit, but began riding mountain bikes with my son when he was about 13. He rides with a team, and I try to keep them in sight on the trails ;-). <br />
<br />
I really like to eat. I like sweet stuff, salty stuff, spicy stuff, sour stuff, etc. At some point, however, you have to decide, "Am I going to have that?" Too much isn't good for you, and I notice, without exception, that if I eat sugary foods, I am stiff and sore the next day. I understand the sugar is at least nearly addictive, and causes inflammation in your body. It certainly does in mine. Food is, historically, and evolutionarily, nourishment. Humans are so inventive, that we have found countless ways of making our sustenance more appealing and palatable. This has, unfortunately, coincided with a huge reduction in the caloric demand necessary to obtain the food. Bad, Bad combination. We are programmed to eat. We do that very well. Processed foods are everywhere. Unfortunately, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and obesity are rampant. We treat them with drugs and surgery, but we cause a lot of them through behavior. I don't have all of the answers. I am no expert, just an observer. If I, for one, want to age the way my genetics want me to, I have to be sure to eat the way those genes are expecting, and stay active as well. <br />
<br />
In my opinion, the BEST foods for you are those that you can catch, kill, pick, or dig up. Once those basic ingredients are combined with salt, sugar and spices, you are pulled into the trap. I do it, you do it, nearly everyone does it. At some point, you need to say, enough is enough. I'm grabbing myself by the lapels and dragging myself back to the health that I was born into. Decide now, or decide when you get that devastating diagnosis. Up to you.................. </div>

<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> I am very happy to be able to review another of one of the new offerings from Xero Shoes,
the Mesa Trail.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> Please check out the link above and take a look at Xero's Spring 2020 collection. They now have these, the Colorado, [Review below] and many other new styles. This is a great release, and you really ought to take a look. There's something for just about everybody [including the kiddos!] </span> </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> I’ve previously reviewed
the Terra Flex, a no-nonsense all-purpose trail shoe from Xero.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This shoe, however, is specifically designed
for trail running.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It has a great, luggy
sole that gave good traction on dirt, grass, sand, gravel, pretty much any
surface we could find.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It even gripped
well on some pretty steep inclines, some of which were pretty wet and mossy.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> We took the Mesa Trails out to Los Jilgueros, a local nature
preserve near home in Fallbrook, CA.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We
picked this spot, as it has a lot of varied trails, as well as some interesting
man-made features that gave us a chance to see how these perform on lots of
surfaces.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> Xero has preserved a measure of ground feel, as with all of
their shoes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is a really rugged
sole by Xero standards, so there is some ground feel trade-off for the traction
and rock protection that it provides.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>While
rugged, the sole maintains the flexibility that we have come to expect from
Xero Shoes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These shoes do come with a
removable insole if you want to enhance ground feel. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It almost goes without saying, but these are,
of course, zero drop.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This shoe has a
very soft, breathable upper with a mesh-type quality from all of the
ventilation holes built into it, including the tongue.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Mesa Trail has more of a traditional
lacing style than many of Xero’s other models but laces up nice and snug for
trail work. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> One thing I noticed immediately was how light this shoe
feels.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Xero has built a really tough
trail running shoe and not sacrificed lightness nor flexibility.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although this isn’t an “official” weight, my
Mesa Trails, at size 13, came in at a mere 9.3 oz each.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you plan to do any distances, the
lightweight feel to these is a huge benefit.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;">These shoes have a tough but flexible toe cap that gave me
all the front protection needed on trail runs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>It also has a protective vertical strip up the heel.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The interior is soft and felt great with or without socks and
the toe box is quite roomy, even for my wide feet.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "tahoma" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;"> Overall, I really like the features, style and fit of this
as a trail running shoe.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These are new,
so I can’t yet speak to durability, however I have been wearing Xeros for 10
years now, and, although some are pretty banged up from heavy use, I haven’t
worn out a pair yet, so I am expecting this model to hold up as well.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I think you will like these, particularly for
the blend of toughness, grip, flexibility and comfort, without the added weight
that you may find in other brands.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Today we are doing a review of the newest offering from Xero
Shoes, the "Colorado".<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have been anxious to post this review, as I am really excited about this model. This is a sandal
made for trail, hiking, and any number of conditions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We really put this one through its paces, and
it performed well in lots of different conditions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> There is a link above that will take you to Xero Shoes' site, where there are other models and reviews, including a video review that I did. I will be posting a review that I did for the new Mesa Trail. It is a shoe designed specifically for trail RUNNING, and I think you'll like it as well. I'd be pleased if you would take a look at these, and a number of other new models from Xero Shoes in their Spring line-up!!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Before we get to performance, I want to talk to you about my
initial impressions with this sandal.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Out<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>of the box, I noticed that
the material of the upper is very smooth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I has the "barefoam" insole for some protection on the trail, and a
really grippy tread, in true Xero fashion.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I noticed that the toe box is not only wide, but very roomy vertically,
giving your toes plenty of freedom inside. The openings along the sides give
great ventilation for your feet, as well. These are two features that
particularly impressed me.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Colorados
have an elasticord for adjustment, and once you find the proper tension, they
sit nicely on your feet, with no slippage whatsoever, even in wet conditions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We took these on
the trail, and they handled it well, from rough singletrack to some very rocky
conditions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The soles still give you
adequate ground feel, but enough protection that you don’t have to shy away
from rocks either.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The sole grips well,
even on relatively smooth granite, and gives good traction when doing stream
crossings or in other wet conditions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Those openings along the sides also allow water to flow
directly through and drain out, so you can hit the wet with confidence that
your feet will dry out quickly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Although these will primarily be used for hiking, they do
well as running sandals, too.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I took
these out and did some trail running, and followed up with some time on
asphalt.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I even wore them around during
the day on shopping trips, etc.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They adapt
well to conditions, and my feet, even in new sandals, had no hot spots or other
problems.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Xero shoes continues with their innovations, and this model
is no exception.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You will not be
disappointed with this sandal.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You owe
it to your feet to try these! They will become your go-to all purpose sandal.</div>

Ok, its that time of year when the Gyms, Health clubs, and running paths fill up with committed people determined that THIS year, they will do WHATEVER IT TAKES to "get in shape". Those venues will empty out in a month or so, when life begins to get in the way of those commitments. Does this mean those people are weak-willed, or less intent upon being healthy? Nope. It means that they have lives to lead, and sometimes (usually) life gets in the way of our best plans and intentions. So how do we handle this? I worked out everyday for 2-1/2 weeks, then I got a cold, or had to go to an all day meeting, or had a series of kid events and I didn't get to it. Well, that's it. My New Year's resolution is blown. Might as well grab the Doritos. What the hell was I thinking anyway? Sound familiar? We're all human, with human abilities, failings, commitments, etc. I makes no sense to, based upon an artificially contrived holiday tradition, try to plan every day for the next year. It's a set-up to failure.<br />
<br />
There are probably many solutions to the problem. I'm offering one here. Make a resolution EVERY DAY, as to what you will do THAT DAY ONLY to accomplish the goals that you set for yourself. You can't plan a year in advance for daily activities, but you can reasonably anticipate the things coming up on a given day. If your goal is fitness, health, etc., plan what you are going to do THAT DAY to move you forward toward those goals. Are you going to fast that day, eat only low carbs that day, get in a solid workout that day? Then at the end of the day, look at what you actually did. The next day, do the same thing. What you can do will vary on given days. Make EACH DAY a new commitment, or RESOLUTION, if you will. Some days you will screw up, make bad choices, not have time to do what you planned, etc. <b><u>Get back on it the next day</u></b>. One day off the wagon won't, in most cases, have any lasting effects, nor will one day of doing everything right have lasting benefits. If you plan to do this every day, however, the trend will show the benefits over the course of a year.<br />
<br />
One day, one plan, one commitment.<br />

I have just finished a fascinating book by Dr. Jason Fung, and he is a proponent of intermittent fasting as a health lifestyle. I have tried this on quite a few occasions, and I admit, it seems to make me feel better to go extended periods without food intake. I haven't tried long fasts, although I don't think they are a problem. I have done some 24 hour and near 24 hour fasts, and to me, they seem like a great way of weight control. My favorite length, of those I have tried, is about 16 hours. If you eat dinner and skip breakfast, you are there. To me, it is effortless, and the resulting reduction of food intake, along with the extended period of time for your body to use up glucose, is a great combination. I exercise during this period, and have never noticed a drop in energy levels. Your body is an amazing machine. Once the glucose is used, it just switches over to fat burning for fuel. That, of course, is a simplistic view, but it is essentially what happens. Check with your health care professional, of course, as fasting does not seem to be recommended for some people, such as women who are pregnant, children, and those with other conditions for which it could be detrimental. I am just trying to continually share what I encounter on this journey......<br />

Well, the holidays are here, and it's REALLY easy to get complacent, overeat, put off training, etc. You need to resist it, though. Resting for an extended period of time is a trap. Never put off training until "tomorrow". The negative effects are cumulative. You need to make a choice. You owe it to yourself and your family, as well as the rest of society to be as fit and capable as possible. If, heaven forbid, a disaster happens, you need to be fit to react as effectively as possible. Whether it is getting your family out of a car that is trapped in high water, running up or down stairs in a building during an emergency, or any number of things, you need to have the ability. If you sit and eat junk all day, you are deferring your responsibility to someone else to help you out. If we are capable, we can not only help ourselves and our family, but someone else who is less capable, to get out of a dire situation. Be the person who can do it. </div>

Well, it's been a bit of a hiatus, but life just kind of got in the way, with lots of family, work, and other commitments that necessarily pulled my attention away from here for a while. Throughout everything, I have continued to train, adding in some Mountain Biking, as well as working on our organic orchard most evenings and weekends! I plan to have some more reviews coming up, so please check back. </div>
<div class="blogger-post-footer">http://technorati.com/faves?sub=addfavbtn&add=http://www.primitivehealth.blogspot.com</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975431442577522401.post-75185666173232317702018-06-05T16:49:00.002-07:002018-06-28T16:11:39.035-07:00LIFE DIDN'T CHANGE IN AN INSTANT LAST SUNDAY....LIFE PERCEPTION, HOWEVER, DID<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Easy trail ride on our mountain bikes. My 13 year old son and I hit some trails in a local preserve just a couple of miles from home. Nice little wooded area with good trails, some hills, and set up primarily for pedestrians, but bike-friendly, as well. We had ridden it before. About 15 minutes into the ride, and about a mile from where we had parked, he was riding ahead of me about 50 yards. There was a little footbridge that was designed with an access ramp, followed by a 45 degree turn to the left. He went up the ramp at a moderate speed, didn't make the turn in time, and as I watched, he went off the side of the footbridge an instantly disappeared. I heard him yell once, and then nothing as I frantically rode up to where he went off.<br />
I dropped my bike and saw him down, thankfully only about 8 feet at the bottom of a dry creek bed. He had crashed through undergrowth and was still astride his bike, leaning against the bank, trying to unbuckle his full-faced helmet. I went down the embankment and reached him after banging up and scraping my arm in the process. He was conscious and alert, but in a lot of pain. When he hit, the pedal and crank arm had slammed into his inside calf/shin. He couldn't put any weight on one leg, his elbow was cut up and bruised, he had scratches and welts from the brush all over him, and he was complaining of pain in his hip and ribs. I was able to get him off of his bike, after we had checked for any spinal injuries, as best we could. Pushing the bike up the bank and depositing it on the bridge to get it out of the way, I went back down to him and he was able to put weight on one leg. I straddled the creek bed and got him up on the opposite bank high enough that I could lift him up onto the bridge. I sat him down, did further assessment, and determined that he wasn't going into shock. I gave him my cell phone, then biked like a maniac back to the parking lot. Throwing my bike into the back of the truck, I drove it to a location about 100 yards from where he was. He tried to hop, but I ended up carrying him back to the truck. We stopped by our local fire dept where he was checked out thoroughly. A later appointment with his Dr. and full x-rays confirmed he had suffered only bruises and scrapes.<br />
The moral to this story is two-fold. Had that ravine been 30 feet deep instead of 8, or filled with rocks and/or rattlesnakes instead of bushes, or had there been debris or old pipes, etc sticking up, this would have been an entirely different outcome. Call it whatever your belief system demands. He had good fortune that day. When you are going through life, keep in mind how quickly things can change. Don't leave the house angry at your loved ones, hug your kids, appreciate what you have. It could all go away and then you would realize what is important. I realize that now. That instant of horror, seeing him plunge off of that bridge to an unknown fate changed how I look at life. Little highs and lows are now meaningless.<br />
I said two-fold. I am 65 years old. I have been fortunate enough to be healthy. I run, I bike, I work out. Sometimes I fall off the wagon and eat what I shouldn't. I've been on every one of my son's Cub Scout and Boy Scout camp-outs since he was in 1st grade, to include whitewater rafting on the Kern River in the Southern Sierras last summer, where we were both tossed out of the rafts numerous times in class 3 [4?] rapids. I intend for this to continue. Fortunately, I had the physical abilities to extricate him from that ravine on Sunday. Absent a level of fitness, I wouldn't have been able to do that, let alone carry him 100 yards to the truck. This isn't about my physical abilities. This is about OUR abilities. You don't know when life will begin to smack you around. It could be on the freeway, at home in bed, in the wilds, or on an "uneventful" Sunday bike ride. You..........WE have a DUTY to ourselves, our families, and everyone else to train our bodies and minds to have the ability to ACT in such situations. I made a commitment, as soon as the shock of seeing my son go off that bridge into the unknown, that I will train myself EVERY SINGLE DAY, to enhance my ability to deal with situations that arise. You must do this, too. Each minute that you put it off, you inch closer to being unable to rely on your body, mind, and spirit. Each must be trained. No days off. Find SOME way to train, everyday. It is my obligation to society, and yours........... </div>
<div class="blogger-post-footer">http://technorati.com/faves?sub=addfavbtn&add=http://www.primitivehealth.blogspot.com</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8975431442577522401.post-89310756894883538532018-06-01T14:27:00.000-07:002018-06-01T14:27:06.585-07:00BARE BONES "PALEO"<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
There is SO MUCH literature, both online and in print about paleo eating and lifestyle. Th ere are multiple "studies" both pro and con. [Watch for the sponsors of the "con" studies]. I have seen, [and belong to] some Facebook groups about beginning or continuing on the "paleo" manner of eating and living. So many seem to be just coming up with ideas about making "paleo" foods that look and taste like the old high-carb stuff that we are trying to get away from. Paleo cookies, pancakes, crackers, cakes, pies, pizza, etc. etc.<br />
<br />
I think this is a bit of a trap. Our ancient ancestors didn't necessarily have so much the luxury of which foods were the tastiest. They ate what they found, picked, or killed. If we are going to try to at least somewhat mimic that, I think we need to stay closer to that basic premise. I understand what people are doing, and why they take that approach. It is difficult to change a lifetime of habits. My personal opinion is that, in order to really make such a change, we have to change the way we look at food. The human animal is so bright and innovative that we have taken what was once mere sustenance and turned it into the center of most social interaction. From the time our ancestors gathered after a successful hunt to fill their empty bellies with much deserved meat, our very connection with our peers has largely revolved around the food that we eat. Countless billions of dollars are spent each year convincing people to consume different foods. Social scientists, chemists, advertising and marketing specialists collaborate on how much sugar, fat, or caffeine to put into food, and how and where to market it to get the most bang for the buck. Brightly colored boxes sporting popular cartoon characters line the lower aisles of the grocery store where they will be seen [and hopefully demanded] by little ones. Prizes are inserted into boxes. Industry lobbyists swarm our politicians to curry favor for their products.<br />
<br />
Generally, my point is that, if food has been "marketed" to you, you probably shouldn't eat it. Meat should have one ingredient: meat. Vegetables and fruits don't need ingredient labels.<br />
<br />
This isn't easy. Sugar, in particular, is at the very least, habit forming, and some studies have likened cravings to those for other, more sinister sounding substances. <br />
<br />
You won't get this done all at once, or cold-turkey. Our ancient, pre-agricultural era ancestors didn't need bread or cereal, or milk, or cheese, or chips. We don't "NEED" those either. We "need" nourishment. That is meat, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and maybe some tubers or roots. All things similar [not the same, but similar] to what our ancestors lived on. Our bodies haven't evolved much in the past 25k years, but our diet has changed COMPLETELY. Most quickly accessible and cheap food now seems to be grain and sugar based now. Combine this with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and we have a recipe for illness and a lack of ability to accomplish much of anything that has physical demands.<br />
<br />
I know that of which I speak. I'm not here to preach. I've eaten my share of sugary foods in the past, and they taste good, for certain. I notice personally, though, when I eat more carbohydrates, I crave more. When I eat lots of things that contain sugar, I am achy all over the following day or two. Our bodies simply can't cope with what we are consuming, and continue to stay healthy. We need to be outside, get exercise, get some sun, drink clear water and eat as much REAL food as we need, when we need it, not because it is 12:00 and "time" for lunch, or 6:00 and "time" for dinner. Eat irregularly, fast for a few hours, change it up a bit. I like to fast from sometime in the evening, through "breakfast time", into late morning. That gives my body a solid 12+ hours without food. I think that affects my metabolism.</div>

If you look to the right of this page, you will see a link to Xero Shoes' newest offering, the TERRAFLEX. This is a full-blown trail shoe with a great aggressive tread that holds tight to the trail and still provides some ground feel for those of us who are barefoot and/or minimalist aficionados.<br />
<br />
Built similarly to the Prio (See further down on this page for that review), it is an incredibly comfortable and flexible trail shoe. These, like their "street cousins", the Prios, have a 2mm sock liner that is easily removable. If the liner is removed, you don't sacrifice any comfort. The foot-bed incorporates Xeros barefoam for a really comfortable ride, even over rough terrain. I even wore these on the street some, just to test the sole for wear. Xeros have always worn well, and these seem to be no different. The larger lug-type tread don't seem to be showing any appreciable wear, even from asphalt.<br />
<br />
But......back to what they are designed for! The soles on these are still, (of course!), zero drop, and the uppers are a really comfortable fabric. My feet aren't always the easiest to fit, but these have a crazy-wide toe box and combined with the upper fabric, I experienced NO discomfort, even when they were brand new. I choose to wear them without socks, and the interiors are so well made that there are no rubbing seams or other spots.<br />
<br />
I also did a video review on these that you can find on the website by following the link to the right. Please check it out!<br />
<br />
I have always liked Xero's products, since buying my first two pairs in 2010. They have always produced consistently quality products at reasonable prices, and their customer service is top notch. Their site has detailed instructions on determining fit, and they always seem happy to answer any questions or give feedback on any issues that may arise.<br />
<br />
Please give the new TERRAFLEX a try if you ever run trails or anyplace rough. You will be happy with these. I've never tried a better trail shoe. Check them out through the link at the top right!!</div>

I held off much longer than usual to review this offering from Xero Shoes. My apologies to Steven, Lena and the staff who sent these to me to check out, and thanks for their patience. <br />
<br />
This is such a unique offering, however, I wanted to do even more than the usual wear testing on this product. I have put this through its' paces, and have hiked and hiked, done some running, and a fair amount of around town wear on these. They are that versatile, and I'm excited to be doing this review, as these have become a real favorite.<br />
<br />
Let's get started, as I have a lot to say........<br />
<br />
Fresh out of the box, I could see and feel that this product was different. Xero ALWAYS produces a quality shoe/sandal, but these are exceptional. Built on the same running sandal sole, they have a really comfortable upper that snugs up around your ankle for serious hiking, while maintaining that "Roll up in a ball" flexibility for which Xeros have become so well-known. You can see that the toe box is nice and wide, and the tread pattern is capable of serious grip on any terrain that I encountered (and I encountered quite a lot in these!). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DJn3xV5CF8g/WjYDl3OBz1I/AAAAAAAAL20/H_sZY7tBemQ4zfa6_ceATFYkn0MzAydkgCLcBGAs/s1600/daylite1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DJn3xV5CF8g/WjYDl3OBz1I/AAAAAAAAL20/H_sZY7tBemQ4zfa6_ceATFYkn0MzAydkgCLcBGAs/s320/daylite1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The laces are set up in a "speed lace" style for quick tying, and they have a unique texture which really helps them stay tied in every situation. They come with a thin insole that is removable. I actually did remove the insoles in mine for most of the time, as I love every bit of ground feel that I can get. The insoles are thin enough, though that it really isn't necessary to remove them, and leaving them in will likely be better for the interior bottom of the shoe.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N9XCFr-MnuA/WjYDmk4bM3I/AAAAAAAAL24/113yvS-BXrIdQjpxa68fbNS-XnBsE9TPQCLcBGAs/s1600/daylite2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N9XCFr-MnuA/WjYDmk4bM3I/AAAAAAAAL24/113yvS-BXrIdQjpxa68fbNS-XnBsE9TPQCLcBGAs/s320/daylite2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Shortly after receiving these, I had the opportunity to do some camping and hiking at Big Bear Lake, CA. I took these and another pair of Xeros that I have previously reviewed, their Prios. I had a history with Prios, hiking in heavy snow, and I knew they could be my go-to if for any reason the Day Lites caused any foot issues, being just out of the box. I didn't wear anything except the Day Lites, and they were extremely comfortable, whether it was around camp or hiking at the lake or the woods, as seen below. Brand new hikers that caused no foot issues. That is a phenomenon in and of itself!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z2ZIkFxggqw/WjYDi9VBbXI/AAAAAAAAL2k/KDuq3IoC0vosc01jrFr2YbSm__e0G2BOQCLcBGAs/s1600/daylite%2Bbig%2Bbear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z2ZIkFxggqw/WjYDi9VBbXI/AAAAAAAAL2k/KDuq3IoC0vosc01jrFr2YbSm__e0G2BOQCLcBGAs/s320/daylite%2Bbig%2Bbear.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Not too long after the Big Bear Campout, I had a chance to test these in a lot of different terrain during a trip across Northern Arizona. They were great during about a 3 hour hike at the Grand Canyon. Didn't get to take them down in, due to time constraints, but they carried me nicely along several miles of the South Rim.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YxyEvXPUIkc/WjYDh_T_fUI/AAAAAAAAL2g/ltLAcsIOAvMoJL2F38xad9GkQs226THEQCLcBGAs/s1600/daylite%2Bgrand%2Bcanyon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YxyEvXPUIkc/WjYDh_T_fUI/AAAAAAAAL2g/ltLAcsIOAvMoJL2F38xad9GkQs226THEQCLcBGAs/s320/daylite%2Bgrand%2Bcanyon.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
We also spent time at Meteor Crater, as shown in the next photograph. This was more walking and stairs than hiking, but they performed nicely, nonetheless.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VyFNA7bTxlk/WjYDjS4uBwI/AAAAAAAAL2o/XQuvLH6upk0f-tukP3fNMBUcUVNVl3BQgCLcBGAs/s1600/daylite%2Bmeteor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VyFNA7bTxlk/WjYDjS4uBwI/AAAAAAAAL2o/XQuvLH6upk0f-tukP3fNMBUcUVNVl3BQgCLcBGAs/s320/daylite%2Bmeteor.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
A great test of the soles was the day of hiking through the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, near Holbrook, AZ. If you have been there, you will recall that the trails are covered with really sharp remnants of petrified wood, interspersed with heavy gravel. We went off trail a bit, and encountered more of the same, only rougher. I could feel the rocks under my feet, but the soles on these were more than adequate protection from the jagged edges.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d5aM_3YRcM0/WjYDlBpqMGI/AAAAAAAAL2w/3z_mHW_SRQcH1RusA-jWGtNlLA7dCPc0ACLcBGAs/s1600/daylite%2Bpetrified.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d5aM_3YRcM0/WjYDlBpqMGI/AAAAAAAAL2w/3z_mHW_SRQcH1RusA-jWGtNlLA7dCPc0ACLcBGAs/s320/daylite%2Bpetrified.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
As we crossed the northern part of the state, along I-40, there was an obligatory stop. I had been getting my 12 year old hooked on oldies, and he has become a big fan of the Eagles. We pulled off in Winslow, and happened to hit there during a huge Native American festival. The little town was packed, and there was a big parade, with all the streets lined with food and jewelry vendors. Parking was nowhere to be had near our destination, so we had to trek a mile or so to "THE CORNER", so had no choice but to "Take it Easy". Day Lites are good not only for camping, hiking, exploring, but are perfect for "Standin' on the corner in Winslow Arizona"! Here we are below. Aren't we "such a fine sight to see?" There was no girl in a flatbed Ford. We had a great Wife/Mom there to take our picture, though!<br />

The bottom line on these hikers, is that they are the most comfortable, versatile shoes I've ever had. Next summer we head for summer camp with the Scouts, and these will, for sure, be along, ready for the next set of adventures. If you haven't yet bought a pair of these, just follow the link to the top right of this page, and treat yourself. You won't be sorry!!</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Today I have an initial review
of a new product from Xero Shoes. I received these about a week and a half ago, and have a video review in the works, but
I wanted to at least get a short one out with my impressions so far. By way of background, I bought my first pair
of Xeros back in 2010, when this company was in its infancy. They have consistently put out good,
innovative footwear since that time. The
Coalton is a great example.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This latest offering is a casual chukka-style that is
comfortable enough to wear all day, and just dressy enough to get away with
pretty much any attire. In my day job, I
work in an office, and have been wearing these Coaltons to work since
I received them. I am on my feet a lot
during the day, and these leave my feet with a great feeling at the end of the
day. I am fortunate to have a desk at which I can stand for most of the day, and these keep my feet comfortable enough to do so. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
These great shoes are built on the same, tried-and-true running sole that has become one of Xero’s most recognizable features. Absolute zero-drop and a crazy-wide (in a
good way <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span>)
toe box that gives your feet plenty of room.
They are made of a nice feeling semi-distressed leather upper that is
soft to the touch and has an almost suede-like feel to it. Top that off with leather laces and you have
the whole package. These can be worn
anywhere, with jeans or khakis, to more dress-type pants and they just blend in
well. The stitching and Xero traditional
side strap lacing system give these just enough character so they are not “just
another shoe.” The more I wear them, the
more they break-in and get even more comfortable. After a while, these are going to feel like my best old leather gloves, only on my feet. Do yourself a favor and spring for a pair (or
two) of these. As with every Xero
product, they are backed by world-class customer service and the 5,000 mile
warranty on the soles. Xero continues to
push the envelope with their designs, and this one was a home run!</div>

I previously did a video review of the Prios that I had the good fortune to test. I had received them a fairly short time before and had worn them around and run in them some, so I had a decent baseline for a review. After this review, I have continued to wear them, and recently had the good fortune to give them a real baptism by fire, er actually, snow, rocks, rivers, wet logs, ice-covered stone steps, etc., etc.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My family recently had a chance to spend a few days in Sequoia National Park. We had a chance to do some hiking, and I thought that was a good opportunity to give the Prios a real test. We initially hiked to the top of Moro Rock. Not a huge hike, but a couple of miles, and then about 1/4 mile of stone-carved steps to the top. The Prios' chevron design gave me plenty of traction, even where the steps were wet. (There was a LOT of snow up there this year.) What surprised me was how they performed on the parts of the stone that were still ice-covered. Careful steps taken, to be sure, but no slippage at all, even on the ice. That, though, was the easy part of the test.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On our last day at the park, we were looking for a shorter, kind of a wrap-up hike before we drove back home, about 5 hours away. The ranger at the park suggested a nice hike "more of a walk" he said, to Tokopah Falls. "It's only a couple of miles". "Do you think we need snowshoes?" I asked. "No, they recently did a hike there, and none are required.........." (His pants are bursting into flames as I write this!) We started through the parking lot of a closed campground, and noticed that, although the lot was clear, there appeared to be a wall of snow about 3-1/2 feet deep right next to it. Probably a stray drift, I thought. We crossed a little bridge, (at least I think it was a bridge, although it was totally covered in snow, ) and struck out through the woods, following the footprints in the snow as we paralleled a meandering, but roaring, river. The Prios gave me good traction in the snow, as well, and then we began to experience the longest 4 miles that I can remember. Drifts were covering downed trees (big trees), boulders, bridges, you name it. Some drifts were in excess of 10 ft. There was a light crust on the snow, however as the 50 degree day wore on, it became less reliable. My wife is not much heavier than my 11 year old son, and the snow seemed to support them. Prios are really good shoes. Even in size 13, however, they are NOT snowshoes! I spent the next 3-12 hours, mostly up to my knees as my weight 190+ repeatedly broke through the crust. We crossed wet logs, wet, moss covered rocks, and my feet plunged into the freezing water more than once. Each time, the grip on the Prios held fast, and the water drained out of them like they were water shoes. Don't know if that is the design plan, but they do very well in water. They are now my new kayaking shoes! We crossed a bridge that was drifted over so heavily that there was only one bridge railing left exposed. We had to pick our way down a steep snowbank, ease onto the railing, and inch our way sideways, hoping not to slip an plunge 10ft. into the freezing, fast flowing river. Good old Prios performed like champs there, as well. We eventually made it to the Falls, and shortly afterward, began the trek back the way we came, encountering some other hikers with...........SNOWSHOES! Don't know how they made it across all those river crossings. Must have been a pain to keep removing those. The Prios performed beyond any expectations, and even with feet soaked and 4 miles of rough trail, I had no blisters or even hot spots. They held up great, stayed tied well. (Only had to re-tie one during the whole hike), and cleaned up nicely afterward, with no discernible wear. I gave these high praise during my first review, and can seriously heap it on, now that I have had a chance to test them further. These are great, quality shoes, and seem to be up to just about any task that you have in mind for them!</div>

Don't think there's a lot of research going on there about minimalist/barefoot running. Kind of makes the rest of the info on there suspect, as well!</div>

Doing what's best for our health, from an evolutionary perspective, isn't always easy. So much of our whole societal infrastructure (for lack of a better term) is premised upon over-eating and sitting. I have addressed the tendency in our society to push food upon people. Today I want to focus more on the virtual REQUIREMENT that people sit down wherever they go. Go to the airport, you sit. Go to a restaurant, and you SIT while you wait to be SEATED. Go to have your car smogged. You sit in the car, then get out and sit in the waiting room. Go to any government office and you sit. Go home and you sit and eat, sit and talk, sit and watch TV, sit and work on the computer. Most people sit a lot in their jobs, as well. In many cases, there really isn't much of a choice. My day job, for example, is in a government building. Most people sit, sit, sit. <br />
By a stroke of luck, being in the right place at the right time, I snagged a sit and stand type desk that raises and lowers. Since getting it, I went from sitting for about 5-6 hours out of the workday to sitting for about 1-2 hours, when it is necessary. I don't know for a fact what long-term effects this will have on my health, but I do know that our ancient ancestors very seldom had the luxury of sitting around for 6-8 hours. I welcome the opportunity to stand for the majority of my workday. It may not be a huge change, but it is one easy, simple way to dial back the sitting. I intend to push for these for everyone. Granted, given our history, not everyone will want to stand throughout the day, but I hope, at least, everyone will be given the opportunity. A treadmill desk would be even better, but don't think that will fly in this building.........................</div>

Hi all,<br />
<br />
I have had a bit of a chance to wear and run-test the newest offering from Xero, and have put up a short video review. I am providing a link to it in this post, so please check it out. These will be out very shortly, and you can buy a pair through the link on the right side of this page. I plan to do a longer video review soon, as testing is underway! Had a chance to run through the local vineyards today, and it was a great way to try out the Prios.<br />

They proved to be really comfortable, (my preference is without socks). One great feature of these is the HIGHLY reflective lacing. I frequently run in the early morning darkness, and when you are on the road, this could literally be a life-saving feature. Hi all,<br />
<br />
To the right you will see a link to the new Prio from Xero Shoes. I just received a pair of these, and am currently testing them in preparation for a review. I will post a review on their site, and also do a video review after I have put these through their paces a bit. I have a couple of initial observations that I would like to share, as I prepare to do a thorough review; I put these on when I received them, and noticed that the toe box felt significantly wider than the Hana's that I last reviewed. The Prio is an all-around running, exercise, you-name-it shoe, and that toe box is proving to be one of it's best features. I'm so far impressed with the overall quality of the shoe itself, and it has the Xero signature flexibility so that it feels like nothing on your foot. These shoes are shaped like..............feet. What a concept, huh? Anyway, more to come on this as I get my full review ready. Stay tuned................</div>

Steven, Lena and the crew at Xero Shoes continue to innovate and improve their impressive line-up of footwear. The newest offering is the LENA, a much-awaited ladies' version of their HANA. I tested and reviewed the Hana, and it is a great casual shoe. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpgE1aFz4Hg&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">Hana Review</a> The Lena is built along the same lines, and although I haven't yet obtained a pair of these for my lovely wife, they look as great as the Hanas. There is a link to the right where you can find out more about these!! Do yourself a favor and check them out. I've been dealing with Xero Shoes since shortly after they began, (buying my first couple of pairs some time in 2010, I think.) Both of those pairs are still in use! The company has developed a great reputation over the years, and they have excellent customer service, as well.</div>
